The active ingredient in Mounjaro is tirzepatide, which stimulates two naturally occurring hormone receptors: GLP-1 and GIP. Other weight-loss injections such as Wegovy work on GLP-1 alone, whereas Mounjaro also engages GIP to increase weight-loss potential.
GLP-1 helps regulate blood sugar and appetite and slows stomach emptying to keep you fuller for longer. GIP regulates energy balance in the brain and fat cells, enhancing the appetite-suppressing effect.
You take Mounjaro once a week, on the same day, injected under the skin of your stomach, thigh or upper arm using the pre-filled KwikPen (which holds four doses, lasting four weeks).
The starting dose is 2.5mg weekly for four weeks, increasing to 5mg for the next four weeks, then adjusted monthly up to a maximum of 15mg. Not everyone needs the higher doses.
